Strange day, Passover and my class Today I got a letter from a high school classmate apologizing for her meanness (and she was nasty) to me those many years ago. It was nice to get and nice to see that she has changed.
In other news I suddenly decided to go home for a weekend in 2 weeks for Passover. It is a little crazy to fly coast to coast over 3 days but a: my sister really wanted me to come b: my mom said she would buy the ticket c: lots of my family and family friends will be there and I never get to see them d: It might be the last chance for me to see the family manse before it is sold. So yay on that. I even found a cheap ticket.
David will stay home which is sad-- he has to operate a telescope on Sunday or Monday night so can't travel with me. However I won't be gone long and he wouldn't have been home for part of it anyway.
Finally, I had a really big week at work. We had a consultant come from AMI (the Montessori big wigs) and inspect my classroom. I got a big thumbs up !!!! Which is really cool - she said I did an excellent job preparing my classroom environment and it is so nice to have that validation. We got the AMI Associated level which is the 2nd to highest-- We will be listed on the AMI website and can use the logo, I believe. We can get the highest level, AMI recognized when we have more students and at least 75% of them come from proper AMI primary classes. |

Look! a Montessori YouTube video Well friends, if you want a really funny, yet informative look into my career, take a look at this video! What makes it extra cool is our training overlapped some so I know him.
In other less interesting news I stayed home with a cold today and yesterday I took my first nebbie (fancy asthma med) in 5 months.
In fun news my parents are visiting starting this Thursday and we have plans to get into all sorts of fun trouble. |

Attn Grammar Lovers -help! So one of the things that I love about being a Montessori Educator is that it allows me to go back and revisit subjects that I thought had no application to me as a student- like spelling, handwriting and grammar. Those of you who have known me for a long time may feel free to fall off your chairs laughing now.
Grammar is actually really interesting and I enjoy writing sentences on a roll of paper then ripping them apart and designating arrows labeled "direct object" etc. while assigning parts of the sentence. After I show a few examples, the children write their own. This week one of my kidlets came up with one I couldn't figure out. "Sarah makes us run" If it was "Sarah makes stew for us" It would be easy Subject: Sarah Predicate makes Direct object: Stew Indirect object Us
Can anyone sort out what is going on in "Sarah makes us run" ? I've only gotten as far as to decide that run is not acting as a normal verb. |

A real post from me! Dear friendlies and other delightful people, So I have been meaning to blog for a while -- since New Years to be precise. But since I've ended up waiting so long a whole bunch of other interesting things have happened so it would take forever to write about them all. So here is the cliff note version of my adventures ( for details and pictures click here ) |

Sarah dyed her hair purple and hasn't told anybody, and I've hijacked her LJ while abusing her hospitality - azgeodog who drove all the way from PHX to go to her b'day party (and now she is going to beat me up) |

We are fine Thank you to everyone who has asked how we are doing in light of the wildfires.
Everything is ok for us, even my asthma is doing fine (I've been pretty healthy lately, yay!)
Only two things are different:
1-We had a friend from my dance class crash with us for two nights becasue her road was closed
2- I had to keep my kids inside for recess today and probably will again tomorrow |

Two for two Well I know I'm supposed to be posting about my awesome trip to Germany but I have so many stories to tell and I keep on spending all of my writing energy on my silly masters papers.
But I thought y'all would enjoy this one.
So last night when I was out Contra Dancing w/ my dad I ran into an SCA friend from long ago. We we both thinking "don't I know you" And then my brian decided to play nice with me and zip zip zip I pinned down the event we met (it was Kingdom Crusades where David/ Gavin got his gold scarf). It was a trip! We went out to dessert and caught up as it has been five years since we've seen each other.
So tonight I was feeling slothful for having sat at the computer all day working on my sooopid masters paper (3/4 through one haven't started the other) so I decided I would go swing dancing and get some exercise. And I ran into someone else! This one wasn't quite as fun as he was an old co-worker from the wastewater lab (also ~5 years ago) but it was still cool.
So I'm wondering who I will meet if I go out dancing again tomorrow!

Look at me, I'm posting! So I have been informed that I haven't posted since January. Well, I guess I can fix that with this fun little post about what I did today. Today after school I picked David up from his department and then we drove off to Burbank in search of a Hollywood mainstay- Baron's hats. Are we big into Hollywood? Nope, but David's lovely fedora having been rained on, swum in and in other ways harassed needed to be blocked and starched again. I guess it is a sign of the times when you can but a hat six ways from Sunday - on the internet, in many many stores but there is only one milliner in the metropolitan area. So this is how it comes that David, having wanted a fedora after seeing Indiana Jones gets his refurbished at the same place that made the original. As we were walking back from dropping off his favorite hat I noticed something odd in one of the yards- the lawn sculpture was moving, wait- it is a real tortoise- no two tortoises -- make that five! They were HUGE some 2.5 feet long and very very cool looking. The owner noticed me ogling and invited us to see his REALLY old tortoise a 25 year old named Shelly. He even fed her for us. Now that was cool. So that was my afternoon. In real news we are packing my classroom into a storage unit tomorrow and I don't have the address where we will unpack it. I sure hope that comes through on multiple levels but just in case I have brought home my personal materials. I leave to go back east on June 18th - I will be finishing up my Masters degree in Baltimore, hanging out with lots of cool Montessori people from training centers all over the country. Much love to all, Sarah Current Mood: cheerful |

Well I haven't posted in a while... Plus a poll Where have we been since November? Busy! David and I had a very nice time back in Virginia with our families over the holidays. Life in pasadena is good, I bike to work most days, I Irish dance twice a week, I do yoga with my class twice a week, we have friends over for dinner frequently and we also play a lot of board games. I have really enjoyed my Montessori class this year. My classroom is set up almost exactly how I want it, the children are really getting the hand of being self directed, I'm seeing a lot of really nice work! So yay. Unfortunately my school is severely mismanaged. In what way you might ask? Well let's see, I am the only lead teacher of what was 5 classrooms that has been here since September. The head of school was fired in January. The lease on my site is up and we don't know where we are going yet. There is talk of not being able to make payroll in March. There has been a steady drain of students which exacerbates the bill paying problem. So what am I doing? I go to board meetings, I'm on the strategic planning committee. I talk to parents and tell them I'm here to stay. Well I'm here to stay but is there going to be a school to pay me? Very interesting... So this moves us to the next part of my post... What should Sarah do with herself if the school goes belly up? Factors to consider... There are no other Montessori schools in the area that I would be willing to work at (at least there weren't 2 years ago), I may only be here one more academic year as David is probably graduating in May 2008. Now for audience participation! You are my friends you know me :) What should I do to pay the bills for a year if I find myself without a job in my chosen career? Ankle Update Ankle is feeling almost all the way better. I think I will be fine dancing on Tuesday. I gave it a rest yesterday at an SCA event- usually I fence but this time I heralded (announced the pairing) It was fun. I got a funny white stripe across my forehead from my circlet though-- I should have worn my sun hat.
David and I almost got awarded arms again yesterday but that was stopped after they figured out we had already been awarded arms years ago.

Went home early from work While demonstrating how to dribble a soccer ball at the park w/ my class I twisted my ankle. I had to have a coworker drive over to walk the kids back to school, I took her car back. Even though I can put weight on it it was hurting so I went home to ice it. I rode my bike home but I think I will drive tomorrow. It hasn't swollen much which is good. I imagine I will be back to normal activities next week. Current Mood: sore |

My latest update Dearest Peoples, I really owe you an email-- I have owed you an e-mail for a while but I have been very busy which is both why I owe you an e-mail and why I haven't sent one. However after my LA excitement today I decided I really really need to send one. What excitement you might ask? Perhaps I should save it for the end o the e-mail. Ok, Ok I'll tell you now. So there I was walking with my students to a large picnic bench at The Rose Bowl park having just finished P.E. There were 2 picnic benches one in front of the other. Both were occupied by a mom and her child so I figured we would go for the closer one. As we sat down I had a little conversation with the mom there - about if we needed her to move- I said we didn't but she wanted to give our class more space so she moved off explaining to her son that they were moving so the class could sit together and we were from a school and he would be going to school soon. I didn't think much of it other then saying thanks. Then my coworker Andrea came up to me and said, "Do you know who that was?" I replied something along the lines of "huh?" While she filed me in that it was Carrie Anne Moss as in Trinity from the Matrix. Woah! She looks a little different with out all the leather and guns but it was her! Way cool. Of course I was a dork and went to talk to her a bit when she came back to the vicinity but her and her crew of other famous looking moms that she had reappeared with were moving on. So that was my brush with fame. I had another one at my old school- Virginia Madison's son went there but I met her first and then figured out she was famous - not as cool. But really I ad other news to relay. 1- This summer I graduated with my Montessori Certificate woo hoo!! I am now an official AMI Elementary teacher. Next summer I will take a few more courses to round out my masters. 2- After my final exams David wend off to an Astronomy conference in Prague- then we met up in London. We visited David's relatives for the better part of a week which was delightful and at the end I got to meet up with my pen pal Leon who I met in Elat many many moons ago. 3- I have my own classroom this year and more students. It is really fun to have students from last year that know how to work in a Montessori class and things are going well. 4- Being married rocks and David is wonderful. Until later! I write this From a newly functioning lap top
Yay
But as I do I lament the loss of data and the 2 + weeks it took me to get it fixed.
Really it isn't just the data loss but also all the book marks, e-mail settings, programs, shortcuts and other things that I developed over time that I'm sad about too.
I well, we are now proud owners of an external hardrive and will back up more often then never. |
